“Do we have the courage to face the realities of our time and allow ourselves to feel deeply enough that it transforms us and our future?” asks photographer Chris Jordan as he embarks on a journey to Midway Island. We as humans know that plastic is not food. Animals do not. They mistake plastic for meals, and then choke on the plastic and die. Jordan’s video “Midway Island, North Pacific Ocean, Unbelievable!” depicts a sad visual story on how these animals die. The viewer sees birds choking on plastic, their wings fluttering, their eyes closing forever. The video is a disturbing, yet realistic, look on how plastic harms wildlife and why it needs to change. To answer Jordan’s question, if we as compassionate humans can change the way we think about plastic, then we can also help animals.
