“Revision is not torture” is the message I tried to impart to Dewey students last month at their first author visit in over 9 years. “Your teacher is like my editor,” I said to them, hoping to assist teachers in their quest to help students edit their own work.
Dewey Fundamental School, Fair Oaks, CA
Dewey students welcomed me with long construction paper trains that decorated all four walls of the multi-purpose rooom, plus several hallways in the school. Together, we read Jingle the Brass, demonstrated railroad concepts with student volunteers, and learned about what it means to be a professional writer. Visiting Dewey was a unique blend of visiting old friends and making new ones. Many thanks to the teachers, administrators, and staff who made my visit possible.
