I’m attending my first SCBWI National conference! As the newly appointed co-RA of the California North/Central region (with my pal, Erin Dealey), the days are packed with meetings, sessions, more meetings, and more sessions. Rather than summarize each of the sessions I attended (which is beautifully handled on the SCBWI conference blog), I would like to share some of my favorite quotes:
2009 SCBWI National Conference–Favorite Quotes
By Sherman Alexie (National Book Award winner for The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian) on the responsibility writers and illustrators have to their readers: “Kids are open. They’re receptive. We can alter them in good (and bad) ways.”
By Dinah Stevenson (Vice President and Publisher of Clarion Books) in her talk entitled Zeroing in on Nonfiction: “What interests and amazes kids? What makes them say, “Cool!” Remember kids can be amazed by the everyday. If you take a kid to the circus, he is just as likely to be amazed by the bus ride and the popcorn as what all those people in spangles are doing.”
Elizabeth Law (Vice President and Publisher of Egmont, USA) on whether social networking increases sales: “We’re all over it, but does it work?”
Stay tuned for more!
